WoPH – An Advanced Platform – Bridging Volunteers and Organizations for humanitarian cause
No one can doubt the essential role that internet plays in our society. These days, people try to do practically everything on their laptops or smartphones. This behavior does not only apply to everyday activities, but also in doing charitable work.
However, participation through online donations remains a small portion of total giving. According to the Blackbaud’s 2014 Charitable Giving Report, online giving increased by 8.9% in 2014 from the previous year. However, it still only represents 6.7% of total giving in the US. I believe that this percentage applies not only to the United States but to other countries as well.
If we could build an easy-to-use online platform to revolutionize ways of online giving, surely more internet users would become potential philanthropists to help out others. In doing so, we become a step closer to humanizing the digital space. Currently, many individuals and NGOs strive to make the world a better place. However, most organizations operate independently, and they do not receive the same media exposure and public attention.
To solve these barriers, I propose a platform concept called World Philanthropist (WoPH), a comprehensive tool that connects prospective volunteers with NGOs and charities. Using an advanced algorithm, WoPH matches volunteer’s skills and interests with the appropriate charity. Donations are not limited to money, but also technical skills and experiences.
Another function on WoPH instantly analyzes the keywords of relevant online contents to help readers take immediate action by connecting them to the most suitable organizations. This is possible because it will generate a “WoPH” button to appear next to the COMMENT icon at the bottom of any breaking news article you read. If you click the WoPH button, it will instantly take you to the WoPH website that introduces you to organizations specific to the global issue mentioned in the article. It’s an efficient way that people all over the world can directly reach out to anywhere in the world that seeking relief from tragedies such as natural disasters and famine.
WoPH will not only foster more donors and volunteers but also bolster ethical operation of the NGOs and charities, since all of their information will be available to the public. WoPH will revolutionize the culture of online giving, “making a difference” more accessible.
